Here’s an example of a “friendlier policy” on educating students about the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the learning process.

Hey there! We know artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Bard, DALL-E, StableDiffusion, Midjourney, etc. can be super helpful for learning, so we’ve put together these guidelines to make sure you’re using AI tools responsibly and ethically.

1. Introduction

  • These guidelines are here to help you make the best use of AI tools while avoiding potential pitfalls.
  • Remember, AI is meant to enhance your learning experience, not to replace your own effort and creativity.

2. Responsible Usage

Is AI needed for this task?

  • Before jumping into using AI tools, take a moment to consider if they’re truly needed and suitable for your task. Do you really need it?
  • Think about whether AI will enhance your learning or merely add complexity or creating outputs that you yourself do not understand.

Checking its accuracy

  • Not all responses or information generated by AI are accurate. So it is your responsibility to cross-check and verify its accuracy. One way is to refer to reliable sources. If you can’t verify it, please consult your teachers.

Keeping it honest

  • Don’t use AI to cheat on assignments or exams. It’s important to do your own work and learn from the process. You’re capable of doing more than just blindly copying remember?
  • Feel free to use AI as a helpful resource, but make sure you still put in the effort to understand the material.
  • Don’t use AI to plagiarize or violate copyrights. Be mindful of intellectual property rights.

Give credit where it’s due

  • If you use AI-generated content, acknowledge its use in your assignments by stating which parts have been assisted by AI. There’s nothing wrong in admitting you have asked for help in completing certain tasks.
  • If the source is provided, then cite it accordingly. Do not create invalid references. Check them using scholarly databases such as Google Scholar or ScienceDirect.

3. Privacy and Data Protection

Protecting your info

  • Be careful when sharing your personal information with AI tools. Avoid sharing sensitive details.
  • Make sure you understand how AI platforms use and store your data by checking their privacy policies.

Respecting others’ privacy

  • Don’t use AI to gather or share information about others without their permission.

4. Ethics and Bias

Be aware of bias

  • AI systems can have biases because of their training data or algorithms.
  • Evaluate AI-generated content with a critical eye to ensure it’s fair and unbiased.

Promote inclusivity

  • Use AI responsibly to support inclusivity and diversity in your work and interactions with others.

5. Keep Learning

Stay in the loop

  • Keep up with the latest AI developments, ethical concerns, and best practices.
  • Consider learning more about AI, machine learning, and related technologies to better understand their potential and limitations.

Learn together

  • Share your experiences with AI tools with your classmates and teachers.
  • Engage in discussions about the pros and cons of AI in education and collaborate on finding the best ways to use it.

By following these guidelines, you can make sure you’re using AI in a responsible and ethical way. Enjoy your learning journey!
