With educators increasingly leaning on tools like ChatGPT for crafting tests or assessments, a pertinent question emerges: Are we witnessing the dawn of a new era in educational progress, or are we hurtling towards the demise of authentic learning?

The Lure of Efficiency

It’s undeniable that AI tools like ChatGPT offer unparalleled efficiency. Gone are the days when educators would painstakingly design tests over days or weeks. Now, a variety of questions can be generated in minutes and in different forms. These can be aligned to required objectives or scopes. The boon of reduced workload for educators is tempting, but at what cost? Can the speed of AI-generated tests truly encapsulate the depth and breadth of a student’s understanding?

The Homogenisation of Learning

Standardised tests have long been a double-edged sword. On one hand, they offer a consistent benchmark for comparison, but on the other, they often bypass the individual components of each student’s learning journey. With AI dictating the rhythm of assessment, there’s an intensified risk of painting all students with the same broad brush. This potentially leaves no room for the unique talents and skills that make each student unique. However, there’s also a counter-argument, in which AI-driven evaluations could make genuine student work shine brighter against the standardised backdrop. That is, unless students begin using generative AI to produce their assignments, which blurs the lines of authenticity.

The Diminishing Value of Personal Expression

Historically, written reports and assignments have acted as essential pillars upholding the principles of individual thought, creativity, and critical insight. These tasks allow students to delve deep into subjects, hone their analytical skills, and express their personal viewpoints. Beyond mere grades, they offer a window into a student’s intellectual growth and their ability to apply learned concepts. While AI can replicate or even surpass human efficiency in many areas, it lacks the innate human ability to appreciate context and the richness of individual expressions. After all, many could be relying on AI to churn out ideas that they may not even understand.

Striking the Delicate Balance

No one can disagree with the advantages that AI brings to education. It promises efficiency and adaptability. But should it replace the human touch in education? Perhaps the solution isn’t an outright replacement but a symbiotic relationship. Let AI serve as a tool, but let the educator be the master who can fine-tune the content to best serve their students. Above all, educators should still be the ones who provide meaningful learning experience for learners.

AI’s infiltration into education, as shown by tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and ClaudeAI, ushers in both exhilaration and apprehension. The crossroads at which we stand poses a crucial question, that is “Will we harness AI as a tool to elevate education, or will we let it dilute the richness of authentic learning?” The choices we make today will echo in the classrooms of tomorrow.
